The essence of Namibia with Above and Beyond Holidays

Discover the essence of Namibia in this short promotional video we put together on a recent 4WD adventure.

Short and jam packed into 5 days, we drove overland to the Sossusvlei and up the Skeleton Coast including Swakopmund and Walvis Bay.

In our rented 4WD’s with duel fuel tanks ( a good idea in Namibia ) we also made a short drive lapse which you can check out below !

This video will really give you good idea of the harsh, vast and open terrain reminiscent of central Australia that you are faced with if doing a self drive of Namibia. We covered about 1200 km’s in the drivelapse

If you enjoyed this, we also drove the Garden Route and compressed it into a drivelapse

A Garden Route self drive timelapse – Port Elizabeth to Cape Town

A South Africa holiday is never complete without driving the Garden route and visiting the Western Cape, a stark contrast to the lush green Eastern Cape.

You can watch our drivelapse below as we drive the entire Garden Route and into the western Cape.

Starting in Port Elizabeth and driving all the way to Cape Town, through the Karoo, we stop at Knysna and Wilderness, Plettenberg Bay and then turn inland near Mossel Bay for a dessert drive into the western cape through the very furthest south western corner of the Karoo.

Apart from fantastic scenery making this one of the worlds most scenic drives, there is a heap of interesting things to do.

We loved Monkeyland and Birds of Eden just outside Plettenberg Bay.

We were amazed by Africa’s best meerkat experience in Oudtshoorn and stayed at the award winning family run guest house, De Zeekoe Guest House and Farm

Finally, we were refreshed with cold beer at Ronnies SEX Shop – a truly worthwhile visit. It is less sex shop, and more Ronnies pub 🙂 Read the funny story of how Ronnies got it’s name –

Suggested time frame : We did this in 6 days – which is too short. We were rushing and filming for work, so it was full on. 10 days would be ideal, 8 days nice !!

Ronnie’s SEX Shop on Route 62

Decaying automobiles, a big red “Ronnie’s SEX Shop” and an impressive collection of women’s underwear hanging from the bar isn’t enough to deter even the most prudish of tourists.

The idea of a sex shop in the desert is so bizarre your bodies natural curiosity takes over compelling you forward to find out the truth about Ronnie’s SEX Shop !

Legend has it, the mysterious Ronnie was away on holidays, lamenting the poor business model he had chosen for his shop in the desert when his friends came up with an exciting “re brand” for Ronnie’s Shop.

It is foretold there may have been beer involved and that there were hours of deliberation before the carefully considered plan to write SEX next to Ronnie’s Shop was put into action.

PSA – NOTE : We do not condone the filming of video in vertical, but the epic choice of background music somewhat makes up for it

Unusual Sighting of Hippo Killing an Impala in the Kruger Park

WARNING : VIEWER DISCRETION IS ADVISED. SCENES OF ANIMAL DEATH

Hippos are not very smart and highly aggressive. This combination of lack of brains and aggression is why they rank high on the list of deadly interactions with humans.

In this case it looks like a combination of both aggression and lack of another answer to what was potentially a danger to her infant spelled the end for the impala.

Chased into the mud pit by some hungry young male lions this impala attracted the attention of an over zealous mother hippo who would have been nervous due to the close proximity of the two male lions.

Monkeyland and Birds of Eden on the Garden Route

Animal interactions abound in South Africa and often they are a big reason for the trip to South Africa in the first place – South Africa has many many world class safari opportunities before we discuss smaller animals like birds and primates.

The Garden Route is home to two world class tourism conservation initiatives, just outside of Plettenberg Bay. Monkeyland and Birds of Eden rehabilitate and re-wild poorly thoughtout pets.

The emphasis is on pets – it is not a zoo. Animals are not sought but recovered from domestic situations to which they are unsuited. There are monkeys from all over the world – the Americas, Asia and Africa – as well as Lemur from Madagascar.

Monkeyland is the worlds first free roaming multi-specie primate sanctuary. You enjoy a guided walking safari through a small jungle patch with multiple primate species swinging freely through the trees above you.

These monkeys are fed to ensure they don’t compete for food and fight each other and so often you will find them posing perfectly for you at one of the strategically located fruit tables throughout the walk.

Birds of Eden has a 128 meter walkway through the canopy and past the waterway of a small patch of jungle from which you can view and enjoy excellent photo opportunities of bird species from all over the world as well as local birds like the Knysna Loerie

Meerkats, Simples !

De Zeekoe Guest House and Farm, is home to the continents best, naturally habituated meerkat experience on an unfarmed 800 acre block owned by the family farm.

Located in ostrich heartland, surrounded by the stunning Swartberg and Outeniqua mountain ranges, De Zeekoe is an oasis of luxury, tucked into the long grass on the Olifants river.

10 years of spending time with a particular mob of meerkats ( NOT feeding them ) means they now allow you to sit close and watch the sentinels followed by the rest of the family wake from their burrows, warm up in the morning sun and depart on their morning feeding activities.

The drive from Mossel Bay to Oudtshoorn ( Route 328 ) and then to Franschoek ( Route 62 ) or Cape Town is spectacular and should be considered one of the worlds most scenic drives.

Shooting the night sky in South Africa

Taking pictures of the night sky is popular the world over. Taking pictures of the night sky in the Sabi Sabi Game Reserve poses a unique set of challenges for photographers.

All the pictures in this post ( Except the elephant on roof pic ) were taken by Arvind Mattadeen, Director of Hysteria ProductionsAbove and Beyond Holidays, Creative Consultant

You are in the Sabi Sands and there are predators and large mammals everywhere and the perimeters of the lodges are NOT fenced. An elephant literally climbed onto the roof of Earth Lodge a few weeks before our arrival.

11168915_868716806509305_2017690346295297264_n

It feels like it takes forever to setup and get the settings exactly how you want them when you know there are wild animals around. It was about 15 minutes all up but 15 minutes felt like 2 hours ! This is one of the suites at Sabi Sabi Earth Lodge

night-sky-6

After following a leopard moving silently through a riverbed for 300 meters, we all had to sit perfectly still for 30 seconds to achieve this effect with a laser pointer. All the Sabi Sabi vehicles had left and so no eyes were on the leopard and nobody really knew where she was.

night-sky-4

This shot required Arvind to stand by his camera out in the open away from the vehicle for a good 10 minutes, framing the shot and adjusting his settings, taking multiple exposures before achieving the desired result. This tree is next to the vehicle above – it felt a lot longer than 10 minutes !

night-sky-5
Pics above all shot on location at Sabi Sabi Private Game Reserve

This last night sky was not as hazardous and was taken in relative luxury with beverage in hand at De Zeekoe Guest House in Outdtshoorn in the Karoo. Lack of industry outside of ostrich and cattle farming means no light pollution and that means amazing night skies whether you are a photographer or not.
