South Africa Tribute – A South Africa holiday video

Another fantastic video of South Africa – this week thanks to Andrew Ackerman

Andrew’s video South Africa Tribute, starts of with shots of swimming with sharks and great white shark diving ! It then features excellent safari footage at a private reserve somewhere as well as some great time lapse shots of Cape Town and Table Mountain where if look closely to the right of the flowing cloud cover you can see the cable car descending !

We are not sure which reserve the safari footage was shot at, but as you can see Andrew enjoyed sightings of lion, rhino, elephant as well as wild dog, zebra, giraffe and lots of different bird species.

Enjoy ! And don’t forget if you have questions about planning a holiday to South Africa, leave a comment below and we will come back to you ! If you like this post share it with your friends using our Twitter and Facebook buttons !!

The Drakensberg Mountains – An amazing time lapse

Check out this amazing time lapse film by Martin Harvey, called “Drakensberg Time Lapse, South Africa ” with footage from different parts of the Drakensberg Mountain range including the Golden Gate National Park and the Sani Pass area.

The Drakensberg mountain range has the highest peaks in South Africa and its huge length stretches from the beaches of the Eastern Cape to the rugged Limpopo province in the north.

This stunning time lapse portrays the Drakensberg Mountains in all their dramatic glory – big sky, stunning earth and rock formations and wild and windy peaks. Check it out and let us know what you think !

A lot goes into putting a great time lapse film like this together – not only did Martin in this case have to travel to and around South Africa, but he also had to visit some of the most spectacular scenery on offer in South Africa too ! A tough gig !

Myer shoots Spring and Summer 2012 range promotion in South Africa

For years South Africa has offered unique photo opportunities to brands and organisations around the world. This year Australian retailer Myer, chose to shoot on location for their new Myer Designer Spring Summer 2012 range.

A joint promotional activity with South African Tourism – there is a specific website set up by Myer about the promotion here – offering the chance to win a business class return trip for two with 10 nights accommodation and touring arrangements !

Put together by Will Horne, who also produced the final Myer video for the range, this behind the scenes take on a photo shoot in the wilds of South Africa is a great video worth a watch.

Most of the shooting is at Sun City or in the Pilanesberg Game Reserve – a region that provides open spaces and a dramatic mountain range for a back drop, that offers an excellent safari experience within 3 hours from Johannesburg.

For other safari posts on the Pilanesberg, we recently featured a great video called a safari in the Pilanesberg Game Reserve – check it out !

Bongi’s Quest – Educating Children About Rhino Poaching

This last year has been devastating for rhino numbers with poachers killing at least 303 this year alone.

People feel helpless in the fight against poaching – donating to certain causes can help achieve results – but in the long run there is an underlying issue revolving around Chinese perception of rhino horn and its medicinal use.

Many, many people are working hard to educate the eastern world in an effort to stop these horrible killings.

On the ground in the areas where these rhino killings are going on, are some equally important battles taking place, just as vital in the chain to stopping rhino poaching.

Bongi’s Quest – is a childrens educational story designed to educate children about rhino poaching. Day to day, Bongi’s real quest takes place on the ground where rhinos are being killed.

Watch the video to learn more

Chris and Spoon work actively on the ground in Limpopo province, the heart of South African rhino poaching, and across South Africa meeting with schools and children, and educating them about rhino horn and rhino poaching.

Available in many differnt local languages including Zulu and Sutu, and now including Mandarin for Chinese readers, Bongi’s Quest is distributed worldwide but most importantly to African children in regional areas with the ongoing help of corporate and private funding.

It is shocking to hear Chris talking about children telling poachers where rhino’s are for a packet of chips.

All the time getting as close as possible to the paparazzi while getting around to community events in his famous rhino suit, Chris welcomes new members to the “Fun side of saving a species” – how can you not have fun wearing a rhino suit ?

Shark Diving and Ziplining at 100 mph – Only in South Africa

While we love safari and most of our posts are in some way related to safari and game drives, there is of course hundreds of other awesome things to do in South Africa !

Two great video’s that we love which we found recently are of Maura and David’s trip to South Africa on their Vimeo channel Shiffy Studios. Maura and David fly down what is purported to be the Worlds Fastest and Longest Zipline in Sun City, and they dive with the sharks in Gansbaai, 2 hours or so drive east from Cape Town.

The zipline experience at Sun City, Zip2000 , is a 2000 meter long descent with a drop of 280 meters ! Check out their video below !

Shark diving is not something I have done – I don’t know if i will – but this video doesn’t seem to bad right ?

This particular experience is operated ex Gansbaai, an area well known for whale watching and Great White sharks. The main tourist attraction for the area, shark diving is considered the second most popular animal attraction in South Africa after a visit to Kruger National Park by visitor numbers.

Shark diving tours are available as a day tour from Cape Town, with operators running the transport to and from Gansbaai.

After watching these two videos – would you go shark diving ? Or the zipline which reaches speeds of up to 100 miles per hour ?

A safari in the Pilanesberg Game Reserve

Everyone knows about the Kruger right ? We also get a lot of people asking about the smaller game reserves like Madikwe and the Pilanesberg Game Reserve.

As with all safari in all parts of Africa or other parts of the world, it isn’t just the animals that make the experience.

Set to an excellent choice of background music, this well put together video called “Into the Bushes” by Vimeo user tabu, covers a game drive in the Pilanesberg Game Reserve.

Stunning scenery, vibrant colours and sunset shots are what makes this a favourite for us !

Located within a 2 1/2 – 3 hour drive from Johannesburg, the Pilanesberg offers an excellent game viewing option within half the distance of the Kruger. A great option for accommodation is the Ivory Tree Lodge

There is huge variety of game seen throughout the drive, although there are no large predators sighted in the footage. The drive does enjoy sightings of large game such as elephant, zebra, rhino, wildebeest and giraffe as well as smaller animals like warthog, monkeys and bird life.

What do you think of the video ? Have you been on a safari in the Pilanesberg ?
